TGSI Installation Sydney — Tactile Ground Surface Indicators
Tactile King supplies and installs Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSIs) across Sydney and NSW, fully compliant with AS/NZS 1428.4.1:2009 and the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). We work with builders, architects, and facility managers on both new builds and retrofit projects — individual studs and integrated mats.
What Are TGSIs?
Tactile Ground Surface Indicators are raised surface patterns installed on floors and pathways to assist people who are blind or vision-impaired in safely navigating the built environment. There are two types required under Australian Standards:
- Warning TGSIs — truncated dome or cone patterns that alert users to a hazard ahead: top of stairs, ramp edges, platform edges, pedestrian crossing points.
- Directional TGSIs — elongated bar patterns that guide users along a safe path of travel through complex environments.
Where Are TGSIs Required in Australia?
Under the National Construction Code (NCC/BCA) and AS/NZS 1428.4.1:2009, TGSIs are compulsory in all new and substantially refurbished public-access spaces, including:
- Top and bottom of all stairways, escalators, and ramps
- Railway and bus platform edges
- Pedestrian crossings, shared zones, and kerb ramps
- Commercial building lobbies and corridors with directional guidance requirements
- Car parks, external pathways, and loading areas
- Shopping centres, schools, hospitals, and council facilities
Installation Methods
We install individual stud TGSIs (drilled and chemically anchored — ideal for retrofitting existing tiles, concrete, and pavers) and integrated TGSI mats (surface-bonded, faster installation for new builds and large areas). Materials include UV-stabilised polyurethane, stainless steel, and ceramic, selected to suit your substrate, traffic load, and luminance contrast requirements.
All installations are measured and positioned to AS/NZS 1428.4.1:2009 specifications, including correct luminance contrast ratios (minimum 30% LRV difference from the surrounding surface).
